Sheria Smith, the leader of the union representing Education Department employees, criticized the decision, saying, “Not only are we concerned about how we will now pay our bills, but another concern we have is what impact this is going to have to the American public.” Smith explained that hundreds of fired workers were responsible for protecting the rights of students, particularly those with special needs.
